The site plan and committment to stakeholders includes providing park-like ammenities and river access to the public. The vision is to make Zaclon River Landing a hub of activity for paddle sports, fishing, cycling and recreation in the heart of Cleveland's Industrial Valley. Early conversations with potential city and park stakeholders has been extremely positive. Nothing like this exists in the city in this area and on the east bank of the river... until now!

Our main focus will be to build out the docks so that not only CWRU Rowing can enjoy the river, but other paddle sports. We will also work to provide a public water stop, police call box, and signage to direct the public safely and appropriately to use the park.

Cuyahoga River Water Trail.

Look at the map above. It is pulled directly from the Cuyahoga River Water Trail web site. The red diamonds indicate hazards along the trail. A significant hazard is indicated right at Zaclon River Landing as the beginning of the shipping channel. The CRWT web site has a whole section (picture to the right) on safety procedures for transiting this area of the river. Imagine avoiding this hazard altogether!

Placing a public portage point at Zaclon River Landing will allow kayakers and other paddlers access to the upper reaches of the river, but also avoid the main dangers of the shipping channel.

Merwin's Wharf, site of the Cleveland Rowing Foundation, is currently the only portage within Cleveland. The location is great for access to The Flats, but is almost 4 miles from the "green" section of the river up from the steel mill. Plus, the Merwin's Wharf location is in the heart of the freighter and pleasure boat traffic -- intimidating for many paddlers.

The mission of the Cuyahoga River Water Trail is to:
• Increase public access to and along the Cuyahoga River for all people.
• Share resources to create better and safer experiences for visitors.
• Enjoy the health and beauty of the Cuyahoga River.
• Boost tourism and economic development in nearby communities.

Public Park & River Access.

We will provide public access to the Cuyahoga River. Access and amenities will eventually include:
• historical markers highlighting it's place in heart of Cleveland's Industrial Valley
• public space and water stop for local trails
• public paddle sports equipment rental, equipment storage, and launching
• fishing areas
• outdoor observation platforms and beer gardens for larger events
• indoor event space

Vision for the Valley - A Beachhead for the East Bank.

The Vision for the Valley is a Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) TLCI funded initiative led by the City of Cleveland, Cleveland Metroparks, Port of Cleveland and Flats Forward to re-imagine the Cuyahoga River Valley. TLCI provides assistance to communities and public agencies for integrated transportation and land use planning and projects that strengthen community livability. TLCI advances the goals of NOACA�s Regional Strategic Plan by:
• Developing transportation projects that provide more travel options
• Promoting reinvestment in underutilized or vacant/abandoned properties
• Supporting economic development
• Ensuring that the benefits of growth and change are available to all members of a community
• Enhancing regional cohesion
• Providing people with safe and reliable transportation choices

The Vision for the Valley team has identified the Zaclon River Landing area as one of the few stretgic priority areas for the plan. They see the build out of Zaclon River Landing as the "beachhead" for the entire project to transform this area of the Industrial Valley precinct. Across the river within Tremont, signficant investment has been made by the Canalway Partners to extend bike trails and amenities to the west side of the river. Nothing exists on the east side for many, many miles... until now!
