ZRL Awarded Ohio EPA Technical Assistance Grant (Sept 2024)

September 26, 2024: The Zaclon River Landing (ZRL) project was awarded a Voluntary Action Program (VAP) technical assitance grant by the Ohio EPA. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency provides no-cost technical assistance to communities and nonprofits to help increase their understanding and involvement in brownfields cleanup, revitalization, and reuse. The Spartan Alumni Rowing Association applied for, and received, an OEPA Technical Assistance grant!

This grant's comparable value is between $60,000 - $80,000, and is already being put to use by SARA and our Qualified Environmental Consultant. This grant will enable SARA to pursue the designation of the highest level of remediation possible in the brownfield program. SARA will use this to review the Voluntary Action Plan and the Operations & Management Plan, both critical points of the brownfield program.

Special thanks go out to the SARA leadership and our QEC, CT Consultants, for moving forward on this grant. More information for the Technical Assistance (TA) for the Voluntary Action Program can be found here.

West Creek Awarded Clean Ohio Funding - Includes Funding for Zaclon River Landing (March 2023)

March 2023: Zaclon River Landing (ZRL) development partner West Creek Conservancy was awarded four Clean Ohio grants from the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC). The portion of the Clean Ohio Award allocated to the ZRL project is $646,000.

Zaclon River Landing Project is a 3-acre acquisition on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River within the City of Cleveland. This project will convert a degraded industrial property to public park/greenspace with equitable access to the Cuyahoga River and associated water trail. Along with full restoration/reclamation, West Creek Conservancy will install an ADA ramp for direct access to the river. West Creek Conservancy, in partnership with Case Western Reserve University Spartan Alumni Rowing Association, will convert the site to public usage and riverside greenspace with direct access to the river. Zaclon River Landing will be the southernmost public access point to the Cuyahoga River in the City of Cleveland.

More details about the Clean Ohio Award can be found here.

Zaclon River Landing Awarded Cuyahoga County Brownfields Grant (November 2022)

On November 22, 2022, Cuyahoga County Council announced $5 million in grants for 18 local projects as part of the county's American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) program. The money will be paid out as “loans,” but that debt is being forgiven if recipients meet the terms of their agreement with the county.

As part of the program, Spartan Alumni Rowing Association was awarded $131,537 to create access to the Cuyahoga River in an area that once processed chemicals.

Zaclon River Landing Awarded Ohio EPA Brownfields Grant (June 2022)

On June 17, 2022, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted announced $192 million in grants for local communities as part of the new Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program.

The Spartan Alumni Rowing Association was awarded $811,338 for Cleanup & Remediation of the Zaclon River Landing Site. Located on the banks of the Cuyahoga River, this site is a part of Cleveland’s rich industrial history. Created by two former DuPont employees, Zaclon Inc. produced sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, zinc chloride, cadmium, sodium silicate, and galvanizing fluxes on the property. Of the two structures remaining on the property, one is in poor condition. Planned remedial activities include asbestos abatement and removal of hazardous substances such as above ground storage tanks and contaminated soil. After remediation, the Spartan Alumni Rowing Association plans to redevelop the site as a park and community river-access point.
