February 22, 2015: Forty six alumni & friends pitched in to row 5,250,116 meters in the annual C2 January Virtual Team Challenge
(JVTC). For the challenge rowers had to row as many meters as
possible between January 1 and January 31 then log their daily meters using the Concept 2 Logbook. The results were then ranked against
other teams. The SARA team finished in 30th place out of 377 teams -- an improvement of 7 places over 2014 and another meter record!
Thank you to everyone that participated.
The Case/SARA team continued it's form by beating the alumni team from the University of Chicago
after winning in 2014 and losing in 2013. The UC alumni had an "off" year with decreased participation and meters this year with our team
beating them by over 3 million meters - our largest margin yet! The closer action was against UChicago student team (a separate ranking group to the alumni).
The UC undergrads were on form pulling over 500km more than us this year after we beat them in 2014.
Leading the charge for SARA was Weatherhead alum Thomas Schwertner from Germany who rowed 603,908 meters! That's nearly a half marathon every day.
The top alumni finisher was SARA board member Tom Hudak with 247,500 meters.
We had the same number of people (10) break the 200km mark and earned a free Case Crew hat. Congratulations to everyone and
a special thank you to the 10 alumni earning their 2015 hat.
In 2015 we held a special event to remember our dear friend Ken Klika who passed away a couple months before the challenge.
During the second weekend of the month, team members joined in and pulled a session for Ken. Nineteen rowers joined in and pulled
279,594 meters so that Ken could "earn" his hat this year. Ken was an avid indoor rower
that joined our virtual team in 2012 and earned his 200km hat in 2012, 2013 and 2014. He also went on to join the team as a novice and as an
assistant professor at CWRU served as the team's faculty advisor. Below is the collage showing everyone that "pulled for Ken".
