February 10, 2020: Ninety-three alumni, students & friends pitched in to row 13,567,585 meters in the annual C2 January Virtual Team Challenge
(JVTC). For the challenge rowers had to row as many meters as
possible between January 1 and January 31 then log their daily meters using the Concept 2 Logbook. The results were then ranked against
other teams. The SARA team finished in 15th place out of 589 teams -- our best-ever finish!
Thank you to everyone that participated.
The combined Case/SARA team crushed the combined UC student and alumni team from University of Chicago
by over 2.5 million meters. We also took top honors for the "education" category amongst all teams. Our alumni beat their alumni for the sixth year
in a row, but our undergraduates fell their undergraduates. The undergraduate result particularly stung because the two teams were racing for
their 200km hats this year. Therefore, the Case students that cleared the 200km hurdle did not receive hats this year (alumni still got their hats).
This was the first year the UC team combined their meter totals into one group. Both the UofC and SARA teams were far clear of any other education/alumni
based teams. The UofC Student total was 8,153,502m vs. CWRU's 7,111,806m. Due to the "race" between the students, 22 UofC students will get custom
JL hats due to the team win and that individual clearing 200km.
Leading the charge for SARA this year were alumni Dan Bachmann and Thomas Schwertner with Dan pulling 500km and Thomas clearing 360km!
The top undergraduate finisher was Jacob Engelbrecht with 367,334m.
Thirty-five people passed the 200km mark this year to earn a free hat, but since our undergrads lost to UC only 16 alumni garnered hats this year.
Congratulations to everyone and a special thank you to the 16 alumni earning their 2020 hat.
